E3 2011: THQ's Bilson talks Wii U, transmedia

Publisher 's head of nuclear-game weighs in on Nintendo' s new console made, Saints Row, projects, and objects at rest.

The Electronic Entertainment Expo show is big enough that many participants would be hard pressed to see everything, even if they devoted all of three days, just to check out the cabins. But to do the attendees at E3 probably more important to their own business, so that limited time on the show floor at best.

THQ Executive Vice President of Core-Games Danny Bilson.

Such a participant in this year is set to 's Show THQ executive president of the core gaming Danny Bilson. Between the three big press conferences, an investor briefing THQ and its own slate of meetings spent, he 'd show virtually no time on the ground when GameSpot caught up with him for an interview Wednesday afternoon. Nevertheless Bilson courageously answered questions about the unveiling U Wii, THQ 's support for the PlayStation Vita and the growing trend of game-specific community services. He also gave a progress report on the company 's trans-media efforts, including those that have been delayed and / or abandoned.

GameSpot : And what did you think of the press conferences?

Danny Bilson You 're always fun as far as great entertainment extravaganzas. I liked some of every one. There was something in each one of them that I thought was cool, and there were some things I understand didn 't. But that 's OK. That 's more my taste as a player.

GS : Was it understood the emphasis on casual or new interfaces that you didn 't?

DB: No, I understand the new interfaces, and I enjoy the way it creatively. It 's application to only certain things that I didn' t quite understand.

GS : A few years ago, it seemed every major publisher had a big E3 conference. This year it was just the big three, EA and Ubisoft. Is the show losing significance?

DB : The show looks and feels as good or better than ever, and the vibe I'm hearing from people is it's a really good show. As far as press conferences go, you have to measure what you want to present, how you want to present it, and honestly, how much money you want to spend on that. There's a lot of different ways to communicate messages, and that's a really expensive, complicated one. I don't think there's any weakness to the E3 show though. I'm not feeling that at all.

GS

: If you look historically, there were a couple of games that were there at launch that did really well on Wii.

GS

: A trend in this year's game-specific cross-platform has full-featured services such as planning for the FIFA 12 EA or Activision has Call of Duty: Elite. Is this a viable option?

DB I think the connectivity and community-enabling technology - Organise your friends know what they \ play 're, leaderboards for your group of friends, talking to your customers - is really funny. The charges for which there is something else. Whatever you 're charging for it, you get better and them something that' s worth, what is the price. In production for over a year, we 've had an entire IT system for the connection of our games and the output on Facebook and Twitter. That 's some kind of service that should come with the games.

As far as building services around the bonus game, it really just depends on what the offer is and what feels like a benefit to the consumer. We are to speak on the connection of the consumer and more work directly with them, she joins in their games and communities. You 're a lot more with the THQ.com and features in the games, but that comes from all kinds with the package to see. It 's important in those days.

GS

: That was in development, and I'm not sure where that's going right now. It's the film business, and you know how that goes.
