Gamers can finally play the generation game
After Diablo and the return of Max Payne, we begin to see the franchise played by different generations of adults
When Diablo III was released last week and was quickly bought by millions of people (but only nine of them were able to play, if the distress Twitter is anything to go by ), I could not stop t wonder how many of these people had bought the original Diablo in 1996. I do not think much. We also saw the return of another series after a long absence: Max Payne, Rockstar transformed into something old-fashioned cheese black action game skillfully presented and wonderfully cheesy action playable black Thurs Again, I would willing to bet that not many people who spent last week falling in slow motion, while the gangsters filled with high-caliber bullets were doing the same in 2003.
see revivals of the series and restarts all the time in movies, but are less common in games, in part because players neophilism - until recently, only five had not its place in video games, as developers fell on them in search of something better to offer in its place. This is changing. With all the new high definition digital versions and re-releases of the past year, the return of these games indicate the names of a good thing for the maturity of the industry. We arrived at the point where we can look back at the past and see not just a sea of ??obsolescence, but the games that is worth celebrating - or reinterpreted.
Gamesnot sustainable without its icons, but most of them have their roots in childhood nostalgia instead of thanks for adults, is difficult to maintain or Final Fantasy Sonic examples of entertainment mature of the two you like them. However, Devil and Max Payne games are for adults - and are now enjoyed by another generation of adults that was created for the first time. Thus the big names like James Bond, survive: they are collected continuously, enjoy and again by new generations. When gaming brands get there - and I sincerely believe what we get now - they have reached an important milestone
Of all the thousands of things that allowed this to happen, the slowdown in the pace of technological change is certainly foremost among them. Twenty years ago only to become familiar with a certain game franchise, if you happened to own the console that was when he was released, the popularity of things like Chrono Trigger and Shenmue was located in a surprisingly small (and generally very young) audience. If you were not there at the time, most likely will not play. But you refuse to see the Godfather trilogy, and that there was when it was released in the 70s - that's ridiculous. Lots of good art resonates with their time, but only great art resonates through generations.
The situation is somewhat different, however, these successive generations of adults who play in the same series. 15 years ago between Diablo and Diablo III - 35 who played the original Diablo are now three players with 20 years of age who have never played another game of the franchise. This has not occurred before, in fact, video games are not old enough to support half. Now they are, I hope we start seeing more game franchises revised to a new generation of adults to survive a 15 - or 20 - or the useful life of 40 years instead two years of writing Popularity flash before his appeal is milked dry.
