Tales RPGs Are Like Gumdrops, Says The Guy Who Makes Them
I like to compare the long-term Tales
action-RPG series to fast food: they are not particularly nutritious and always know what is happen, but when you have the desire, it may be preferable. Hideo Baba, however, said they are more like gumdrops.
asked Baba, the man who directed and produced the Tales
Games on the reputation of all types are the same: the JRPG same game, same fight hack-n-slash, same graphics of manga style, repair elements very stable. Often, even share the same voice actors.
wish I had recorded his response.
"A simple analogy," Baba said, raising two candies that were on the table beside. He kept them in his hands as his translator explained his words in English. "Take two of these rubber feet for example. The envelope may be the same, but are open to one and perhaps a completely different type of candy. "
Hideo Baba is a jovial man, the kind of person whose enthusiasm makes you smile, even when you do not understand a word he said. In the Japanese energy defended his series, saying that despite the similar packaging anime, each Tales
game is actually quite distinctive. "Although the foundation of the party could be the same, we always change the story, the characters, the music," says Baba. "We always try to put the combat system in a way offering something new. Some of the things that is the same, but I would not say that everything is the same. "
not know if I agree with him, but one of the last games Baba Tales of Xillia
, released in Japan in back in 2011, but will not hit U.S. shores until August 6 not change things significantly: it is a female role. A rarity, a video game, especially a Japanese RPG. "This is something we slowly see a change," said Baba, "but I think most players are ultimately the man ... with
Tales
, the female audience has increased a bit. In response to this growing female fan base, we wanted to create a character that could resonate with. We wanted them to feel like, 'Oh, I get this character. "We made sure he found a very strong woman."
be interesting to see how it happened. Ringing in Japan was good for the first Tales of Xillia
are already in place
Tales of Xillia 2
and the game looks great. During a brief discussion on a Manhattan hotel yesterday afternoon, I asked the producer of champagne on a range of topics. I asked about Vita games in Japan came
Tales of Innocence R
> and> Tales of Hearts R. (The R stands for "remake"). His answer was refreshingly candid.
"Unfortunately, at this moment we have no plans to launch Vita titles," says Baba. "One of the main reasons is, unfortunately, the PlayStation Vita is doing relatively poorly in North America, so it's one of those things that if the numbers have risen sharply, so that's something we would consider."
