Atlus bringing next Naruto games to Wii, DS

08/24/2010 Atlus bringing next Naruto games to Wii, DS

Dragon Blade Chronicles and Naruto vs. Sasuke confirmed for November 16 launches; publisher promises more from the blond ninja on DS early next year.

While the anime and manga series Naruto has seen a consistent stream of gaming adaptations in recent years, the list of companies bringing those games to Western audiences has been growing almost as steadily. One more company has been added to that list, as Atlus today announced that it will be distributing Takara Tomy's Naruto games for Nintendo platforms in the US, Canada, and Latin and South America.

As dogs and sharks, dragons are particularly vulnerable to attack on the nose.

The first two games in the agreement will be Naruto Shippuden: Dragon Blade Chronicles for the Wii and Naruto Shippuden: Naruto vs. Sasuke for the DS, both set for launch on November 16. Atlus has promised a number of preorder bonuses and bundle incentives for customers at stores like Amazon, Best Buy, GameStop, Toys R Us, and EB Games Canada.

Dragon Blade Chronicles is an adventure game that has players take control of both Naruto and Sasuke as they attempt to discover the secret of elemental dragons. Though it will feature the same stars, Naruto vs. Sasuke follows the pair's adversarial storyline, asking players to recruit teams of fighters to control in cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes.

This generation of systems has seen publishers like Namco Bandai, Atari, and Ubisoft play a role in bringing Naruto to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 in the West. For Nintendo's systems, Takara Tomy originally partnered with D3Publisher of America to release DS and Wii versions of the blond ninja's adventures, but briefly took over publishing and distribution duties itself before allying itself with Atlus.

Games of the Week for 8/29/2010: Life lessons edition

08/30/2010 Games of the week on 8/29/2010: Life Lessons publications

Games of the Week for 8/29/2010: Life lessons edition screenshot

Sometimes you just need vulgarity to you during the day.

In a staggering departure from form, the Destructoid staff played videogames this week. Read on to find out more and tell us what you've been on about.

Chester:Metroid: Other M, BioShock 2 downloadable content "Minerva's Den," Guilty Party, and a ton of PlayStation Move games I can't really say much about yet. Oh, and Baby Maker Extremeon Xbox Live Indie games. Yes. It.

Razak:I am convinced my fiancee that since Wasn t the time in front of TV 'view you have to download a game to play together. This is a major step forward in our relationship. I decided to download Super Mario RPG as it's one of the classics I've never played and I figured she would like the story and the time-based, but not too tricky battles. We're about 30 minutes in and I think it's going well.

I'm also playing And yet it turns for the Wii, which LL I 'is considered later, and a little Spyborgs . Bowser's Inside Storystill lives in my DS. I beat him.

Sterling:I beat Dead Space after playing it ages ago. I take back what I said about me getting ready to stop long before the game did. It's so much better on PC and now I can't wait for Dead Space 2. Speaking of PC, I finally moved my Steam files over to my 900GB drive, thus giving me obscene amounts of space for games, so I went on a downloading binge this weekend. I started playing Crysis

I've been replaying F.E.A.R and downloaded an old shooter called Chaser . Both of those do the job they intended to do. Played some RPG called Hazen, which is eehh. Oh, and Monday night fight . Many Monday Night Combat.

Holmes: Got Ufouria: Saga , and Shadow of the Ninja on the Virtual Console. Both games were originally on the NES, and both are filled with design decisions that you just don't see anymore, some for better, some for worse.

In addition, played the title WiiWare Monsteca Corral: Monsters Vs. Robots. It 's so damn weird. The only thing that 's all made me feel this way, Xavier: Renegade Angel.

Lastly, I played some more Scott Pilgrim Vs. World: The Game , trying new stuff to unlock the game's last playable character,  Knives Chau. Rumor has it that she's going to be DLC., to be included Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World DVD. I wonder how that's going to work?

Devore:Many things this time, thanks to Conrad. Shank, Dead Rising: Case Zero, Little King's Story, Ufouria, Lara Croft and Guardian of light , and Monday Night Combat. I think that about covers it. I'm super late to the party on this one, but yeah, everyone really ought to check out s Little King 'History -- the music alone is worth the $30.

Toletino:Somehow, I 've played Mafia AND Mafia II almost simultaneously, and in light of this, I 've found that Mafia IIall I ever wanted in a continuation Mafia , that is to say, an achingly pretty shooting/driving game that follows a story about period Italian organized crime.

Well, almost everything.Mafia II 's story and individual missions are not as interesting as Mafia's are, which is probably something of a worst-case scenario, as those bits were the best thing about Mafia (In addition to graphics). But the graphics and acting are extremely well represented, so I 'm going to stick to this now.

Hey, rent it at least. It 's not as if you LL' drown in the mini-games and collectibles * cough * RedFactionGuerilla*cough*

Concelmo: My Xbox 360 red-ringed for the first time ever this week, so instead of finishing Puzzle Quest IIand Deadly PremonitionI moved to Final Fantasy IX and PixelJunk Monsters. Not a bad trade-off at all.

I am still cursing Microsoft's name, though.

Sarkar: I'd been playing nothing but the NHL 11 XBL/PSN demos, which led me to affirm the fact that I am much better at EA'sNHL games with DualShock 3, in contrast to the 360 controller. I took a break from hockey and decided to finally check Joe Danger PSN demo, which -- for lack of a better word -- is FUN.

But then my review copy of NHL 11 arrived last night, so...yeah. That.

Ross: It's been a very XBLA week for me. Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, Castlevania: Harmony of Despair, and Shank. Oh, and some Super Street Fighter IV.

Holmes: Oh, that reminds me, I played NHL 2K11 at Best Buy yesterday. I guess the game is on some sort of bus tour. They're even giving out t-shirts and hockey pucks, both of which I absolutely loved. I fucking LOVE hockey pucks. So awesome.

The game was just OK. Ice Hockey on the NES is still my favorite sports videogame ever, followed by Cyberball on the Genesis, and Mega Man Soccer on the SNES. NHL 2K11certainly among the 20, though.

Zimmerman: Lots of Shank. Retrieved from the first hour or so Mafia II which has really impressed me in a visual design sense. Also Dead Rising: It Zero , which I'll have more to talk about in the review, and Monsters (Probably) Stole My Princess.

Purley: I played ve ' Lara Croft and the Guardian of Lightwith your roommate, and after blasting Scott Pilgrim game. Have you seen that website from the developer showing off what was missing from the game? It's pretty impressive that this already great game could have been soo sooo much. I kinda hope for a sequel.

Oh, and a great game I played this week? I beat Halo: Reach . I can't say much about it, but boy oh boy, I wish I was still at that preview event, and I don't even like Halo games.

Aziz:I played Halo: Reach too. I can't say anything either, but I can say I'm better than Ben PerLee at the game. ;)

Perlee: Suck it, you're terrible at headhunter. and all the cool kids know it's about headhunter now. FAIL.

Aziz:Yes, and I gave each 's ass in the ability to play and not collecting game.

Purley: Sure, it's hella easy to do that when the only game you play online is Halo 3. Seriously, when people are calling you a robot ....

Aziz: I haven't touched Halo 3 in over a year! I can't even stand it anymore.

Zynga Investment May Herald Google Games

07/11/2010 Zynga Investment May Herald Google Games A post at TechCrunch claims knowledge of large investments from Google into social game company Zynga, makers of FarmVille and Mafia Wars. The amount of money involved is not small — somewhere in the $100-200 million range — and could facilitate Google's expansion into the games market. Quoting: "The investment was made by Google itself, not Google Ventures, say our sources, and it's a highly strategic deal. Zynga will be the cornerstone of a new Google Games to launch later this year, say multiple sources. Not only will Zynga's games give Google Games a solid base of social games to build on, but it will also give Google the beginning of a true social graph as users log into Google to play the games. And I wouldn't be surprised to see PayPal being replaced with Google Checkout as the primary payment option. Zynga is supposedly PayPal's biggest single customer, and Google is always looking for ways to make Google Checkout relevant."

DRM vs. Unfinished Games

07/16/2010 DRM vs. Unfinished GamesRod Cousens is the CEO of Codemasters, and he recently spoke with CVG about how he thinks DRM is the wrong way to fight piracy. Instead, he suggests that the games industry increase its reliance on downloadable content and microtransactions. Quoting: "The video games industry has to learn to operate in a different way. My answer is for us as publishers to actually sell unfinished games — and to offer the consumer multiple micro-payments to buy elements of the full experience. That would create an offering that is affordable at retail — but over a period of time may also generate more revenue for the publishers to reinvest in our games. If these games are pirated, those who get their hands on them won't be able to complete the experience. There will be technology, coding aspects, that will come to bear that will unlock some aspects. Some people will want them and some won't. When it comes to piracy, I think you have to make the experience the answer to the issue — rather than respond the other way round and risk damaging that experience for the user."

Five Crowns

[[[Five Crowns]]]

Discription : Five Crowns is a fast-paced ingenious rummy - like card a game. Its double deck contains 5 suits (the stars are new), but it has no aces or twos. This unique deck gives you many more options for arranging your hand into sets and sequences. The challenge is to see them make the right combinations, be the first to go out; then watch the others scramble as they get one last chance to cut their losses.

Five Crowns, with its beautiful, colorful cards, is easy to learn. Start with 3 cards -- and 3s are wild. The next hand has 4 cards and 4s are wild... and so on. You'll need luck and skill throughout the game because even in the last hand a worthy opponent can come from behind and win. Remember, "the game isn't over 'til the Kings go wild!" For up to 2-7 players.

More review coming soon.

I bought 3 copies of this game for ourselves, and Grandma. It is a similar to rummy, but with an increasing number of cards each hand. Our family plays it all the time. My mother-in-law bought it to play with her "card group". Lots of fun.

GREAT card game. Fun and doesn't take hours to finish. We play with mostly teens and adults as there is a strategy to the game. Easy to understand instructions. Highly recommend.

I love this game -- it is great to toss it in my pocketbook or tote bag and take with us on a trip. It doesn't take up much space, and can entertain us for quite a long period of time. We have played this with my step-son since he was 6 -- for the later rounds it is a little challenging for him to hold all the cards and keep track of what he has, but we just give him plenty of time for his turn and he is able to hold his own against the adults. The rules are simple enough that you can teach the game in just a few minutes -- also because the rounds gradually increase in card number and complexity of options, you get to start out very basic which also helps any noobs.

We love the sub-title that the game is not over until the 'Kings go wild' ... it is really true! Even if you are 100 points behind, in the last round if you get lucky and your opponent do not, you could still win. I have bought this for gifts and it is always enjoyed.

Video Game Legends To Be Inducted Into Hall of Fame

07/21/2010 Video Game Legends To Be Inducted Into Hall of Famekilldashnine writes "Last year we discussed the creation of the International Video Game Hall of Fame and Museum in Ottumwa, Iowa, and a first event in 2009 which brought 3,500 people to witness it. Since then, there's been much progress toward creation of the museum, including the upcoming 'Big Bang 2010' exhibition. Their first event kicks off with formal induction ceremonies, tournaments, record-setting attempts, and an array of concerts from 8-bit music to modern rock. This serves as the first official fundraiser for this new non-profit. Iowa is positioning itself as the Video Game Capital of the World. While some sneer and scoff at this, pointing to LA or Seattle as gaming giants and rightful heirs to the title, the real goal is not to glorify software developers but rather to memorialize the 'heroes of video games,' from the iconic Pac Man to pioneers such as Ralph Baer." Here's a list of this year's inductees. Who gets your vote for next year?

Microsoft Reboots Two Classic PC Games

08/19/2010 Microsoft Reboots Two Classic PC Games An anonymous reader writes "Ever since it launched the Xbox, Microsoft has had a fickle relationship with Windows as a gaming platform. On one hand PC gaming is a major driver of hardware and operating system sales, but on the other hand the PC is inherently less secure than the Xbox console, with piracy much more likely to impact sales of a PC title than a console one. Games for Windows Live has been an attempt to bring some of the success of Xbox Live to the PC, and while many games have shipped with support for Games for Windows Live, it hasn't exactly been a favorite of PC gamers. After all these half-hearted efforts, the last thing anyone expected was for Microsoft to announce new PC-only reboots of two classic game franchises, Flight Simulator and Age of Empires. But yesterday it did just that, announcing a massively multiplayer version of Age of Empires and a new Flight Simulator called Flight. The big question is whether Microsoft can make Games For Windows Live relevant in a market where Steam has taken hold, or if it's too late."
