Eight without horror video games that scare me
Eight-nonhorror-videogames-that-frighten-me-header

I've watched enough horror films to know that I keep coming back to them because of the adrenaline rush from having my morbid curiosities appeased. I wantto see the horrible ghouls and buckets of blood, and because I 'm waiting for that stuff, I' M not shocked when they finally appear. Along with the odd scare to jump, I did not 't think I' ve ever been really frightened by a horror movie.

Know what does scare me? That scene in Pinocchio when Lampwick transforms into a donkey, or the soul-piercing gaze of the Catbus from My Neighbor Totoro. Why would anyone ever expect a colorful children's film to feed the nightmare machine? Is the fear factor always intentional or does it simply manifest itself now and then?

I see this effect in videogames as well. All the Resident Evils, Silent Hill s, and Fatal Frame s can talk the talk, but it's the unassuming ones that chill the marrow in my bones. Sometimes, these games are so unnerving that I find it difficult to continue playing. They're wolves in sheep's clothing, and I curse the developers who are conscious of how their design choices would affect children (or children-at-heart).

And so, in the spirit of Halloween, I give you a list of eight non-horror videogames that have personally sent me on clean-underwear runs.

Having mastered Super Mario 64 , I thought I knew what I was getting into with Rare's first foray into 3D platforming. In truth, I was not prepared at all.

If Super Mario 64As a private park of children 'S, Banjo-Kazooie is like Yosemite National. The sheer scope is enough to give someone like me a panic attack. I'm not a multitasker; I become confused if someone asks a favor while I'm in the middle of performing one for someone else. Hell, I get flustered just by searching for a movie to watch on my Netflix streaming queue! Now I have to collect what and go where then do what and help whom?

Banjo-Kazooie also introduced me to Rare's special brand of anthropomorphism: slapping a pair of googly eyes on everything. At least the furniture in Beauty and the Beast had warm, inviting facial features and actual limbs (or approximations thereof). The objects in this game, however, have no distinguishing features other those cold, intimidating eyes and that unnatural swagger. There's even a living toilet! God, I'm still haunted by Mr. Toilet Manfrom Look Who's Talking Too!

And then there's Clanker's Cavern.

Well, I think I'm done with this level! Am I done here? Yeah, I'm done here! I'll be whimpering softly in the corner if you need me.

I hate creepy crawlies in my house, but I reserve a special brand of hate for ants -- ants in the bathroom, ants in the kitchen, ants mucking about in my Froot Loops. Seeing them emerge from every hairline fissure and potentially setting camp in my every orifice is the reason why I sleep with one eye open. Whenever I notice one of their highways running the length of the counter, I immediately reach for a bottle of Windex and furiously scrub out their transit line.

Deadly Creaturesmay not be the star of the ensemble of my six-legged nemeses, but it reduced me and write me in my universe. It just might be even worse.

This is no charming and whimsical A Bug's Life

While you 'Re shacking up in the long term, I' D offer regrouting cracks in all rooms, extra precautions.

Balloon Kidis the continuation of Game Boy, to Balloon Fight. While the original is straight-up dueling arcade action, the follow-up is a globetrotting quest to rescue your younger brother, who has been carried away by a multitude of balloons that he was fooling around with.

Keeping a low altitude presents its own set of hazards. Most of the time, your flight will carry you over bodies of water. But if you drop too low to the surface, a big-ass fish will pop out and swallow you whole. It's Boss Bass from Super Mario Bros. 3 all over again!

This game is a double whammy for aviophobics and aquaphobics alike. Falling into a bottomless pit would probably be less nerve-wracking!

Imagine strolling into your local arcade (and these days, you really do need to use your imagination). In the corner, you spot a cabinet that's running what appears to be a fast-paced version of Asteroids. You decide to give it a spin.

So you are flying around, blasting enemy fighters into dust and stocking up on bombs. Pretty standard shoot-'em-up fare. It's pretty cool.

Then you hear that voice.

Something zips across the screen. What was that? Is that where the voice is coming from? Here it comes again. Oh God! What is that? You're telling me to Run ? I I will take this advice! AHHHHHHH!

Sinistarwas released in 1982. I 'M not sure if there is a video game prior that can accurately be classified as "terror", so I doubt that anyone would expect from this fright Fest. All I know is the name of shocked a lot of people back into the 80, and nearly three decades later, he can still scare the piss out of me.

Majora 'S Mask is a game in which you literally do not have time to save the world from impending doom. That persistent clock on the bottom of the screen is probably the greatest villain in all of gaming; the chiming of the clock tower as a new day dawns is a dreaded reminder that failure is racing towards you unrelentingly.

The game goes one step father and gives form to your destructor. Just as the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man in Ghostbusters was warped from its image as a harmless childhood mascot, the moon of Termina was warped from a romantic celestial body to a mass of gluttonous terror. Bestowed a ghastly visage and suspended miles above the planet's surface, the moon can be viewed from nearly any location on the overworld. Looking up at the sky and seeing the moon glare down upon me, I feel less safe than I've ever been in any game before.

First, the moon seems so far away, but with each passing day, it drifts closer and closer. On the final day, you can 't rotate the camera, without having to admire that gaping maw ready to swallow you and everyone around you. It 'SA monster who can' t be killed or moved. It 's just there, hanging in space, slowly driving you mad.

There is no place to hide. There is no escape.

What Maw did for films, Ecco does for videogames a thousand times over. A game about a dolphin frolicking in the waves? More like a descent into a madness as deep as the ocean itself.

As mammals, Ecco require air to survive, but since time is mainly spent hundreds of feet below the surface, you have to hunt for underground pockets and bubbles of oxygen. When you think about it, you spend the entire game slowly drowning.

Once again, the vastness of the game world is overwhelming. The ocean is so vast that I don't know how to begin. Coupled with the perpetual race for air, each level is like an aquatic sepulcher. Even if I could muster the nerve to seek and explore, why would I if death is only a few stolen breaths away? I can't do it! It's too much!

To this day, I 've only been able to play this game with infinite air cheat enabled. Even then, I could not 't get far without chickening and using a password to increase until the end. But it only brings me face to face with the Vortex Queen and that 'S another can of worms entirely.

I Don 'T understand why people say that Metroid the game has caused a feeling of isolation. Many stars of video games a lone hero fighting wave after wave of enemy forces. Metroid in no way feel differently to me.

Which is what I will say, if there were no Metroid II .

All the shortcomings of the Game Boy hardware make this title far more atmospheric than its console brethren. The background is an inky canvas devoid of detail; the foreground tiles, luminescent formations devoid of hues. And because the Samus sprite is enlarged to be easily visible on the handheld screen, you get the sense that SR388 is a cavernous landscape with narrow tunnels that could squeeze the life out of you at any moment.

In addition to a few tunes here and there, Metroid II 's soundtrack consists primarily of ambient noise. Without the distraction of a booming score, your mind begins to race. Where am I? What am I doing? Have I been abandoned?

The primary targets in this game, the constantly evolving Metroids, are not waiting behind conspicuously marked chamber doors but scattered about and waiting in the dank corners. Usually, the only clue that a Metroid is in a room is a molted shell, and sometimes not even that. All of a sudden, a pulse-pounding, grating cacophony berates your ears, sparking panic and confusion as a Metroid springs from seemingly nowhere.

But the worst moment is the final confrontation against the Queen Metroid:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9M92rO6WmQ

With every missile that connects, her speed increases and her shrill cries grow louder. Should the vicious barrage and piercing discordance become too much for you, your only relief is to roll out the emergency exit in the bottom left corner and start again. You see, in this battle, without warning, without mercy, Pause has been disabled .

Doo dee doo dee dooooo! I'm zigzagging down the ice slope! Look at me! Here comes the slalom run! I'm going super fast now! I'm...

Amazing and a modest success for the iPhone games Trainyard

Categories: News , In The News, Strange but true , Opinions , New In Pop Culture

Going from the barebones outline seen above to the top of the iTunes App Store in approximately 16 months, Matt Rix's Trainyard is a runaway success. Rix details the game's development -- and astronomical sales -- on his blog, showing its humble beginnings scribbled in a notepad, development delays due to his other job (he developed Trainyard at home in his personal time), and how the birth of his son allowed him to finish the game last May.

He also delves into the relatively small amount of money he made from Trainyard at an early stage, and it offers a free version of the game ( Trainyard Express) dramatically drove sales. "I released Trainyard Express on September 30th ... A day later, an editor at a prominent Italian blog discovered the game and wrote a fantastic article about it. The game shot up the Italian charts and quickly became the #1 free app in Italy, netting 22,795 downloads in its first day at #1. Along with the Expressboot sales in Italy have also begun receiving more and during the day reaching number 1, I beat my record of one day running a profit of $ 140 from $ 240 in one day. It was surprising to learn that up-sell worked. "

Trainyard "for a short time" to $.99 (from $2.99), resulting in his game beating out Angry Birds for the number two spot in the US. Perhaps fittingly, Rix even has a humble reaction to the monstrous success of his recent sale: "Mission accomplished."

Head over to Rix's blog entry for his far more thorough account (not to mention an lovely picture of his baby son -- congrats, Matt!), and check out Trainyard in action after the break or head to iTunes to pick it up.

September US game sales slide 8%, hardware down 19% - NPD

Industry-reporting firms "The new format of the report shows a sharp decline in the console, handheld sales; Halo: Reach, Madden NFL, Dead Rising 2 best games; PlayStation Move raises accessories.

For years, the NPD Group has issued hardware totals as part of its monthly report on US game sales. That changed with today's September report, which saw the industry-research firm withhold a comprehensive tally of how the DS, PlayStation 3, PSP, Xbox 360, and Wii fared. Instead, the company reported only overall hardware sales, which fell 19% to $383 million.

However, NPD does not prohibit the big three console makers from saying how many units they sold during the month. So it was little surprise to see Microsoft trumpet the fact that the Xbox 360 was the top console--not including handhelds--for the fourth month in a row. Some 484,000 units sold during the period, an increase of 37 percent year-over-year. As of press time, neither Nintendo nor Sony had issued sales figures for their consoles, but NPD analyst Anita Frazier did shed some light on the matter.

Halo: Reach conquered the competition in September.

"Hardware unit sales, with the exception of the Xbox 360, are down versus last September, but a couple other platforms, specifically the PS3 and the PSP are up on an average sales per week basis as compared to last month (August 2010)," she said.

[UPDATE] Analyst reports released on Friday

NPD 'S overall game sales have also changed, thanks to the inclusion of PC software in general, the first time. Total sales of game software and computer equipment and accessories declined by 8 percent per month for a total of 1.22 billion U.S. dollars. It was another month, a significant decrease after August 'S 10 percent slide , although that figure did not include PC software.

On the software side, game sales dropped 5 percent during the month to $655 million. With console and handheld software sales combining for $614 million, that puts the PC game market at $41 million for the month.

Meanwhile, non-PC software declined 6 percent to $614 million despite big sales of Halo: Reach. Though NPD has also stopped offering software unit sales figures, Microsoft was all too happy to declare that the sci-fi shooter had sold 3.3 million units domestically in the two weeks after its September 14 launch.

September also saw NPD change its monthly software chart. Gone are unit sales figures for the top 5, and the top 10 are now for combined sales of an individual title across all platforms, not a single title on a single platform.

Though NPD ceased giving out hardware figures, Microsoft wasn't shy about saying the Xbox 360 was the number one console.

However, the new system didn't stop the Xbox 360-exclusive Halo 3 from being the top game in the land, even when put against multiplatform games like Madden NFL 11 (360, PS3, PS2, Wii, PSP) in second and Dead Rising 2 (360, PS3, PC) in third. In fourth place was NHL 11 (360, PS3), followed by FIFA Soccer 11 (360, PS3, PS2, PSP, DS) and Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep (PSP). Coming in seventh was Mafia II (360, PS3, PC), with Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions (PS3, 360, DS, Wii) falling in eighth, Metroid: Other M (Wii) in ninth, and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (360, PS3, PC) bringing up the rear.
